3 Best Spots to Take Your Dog in Waynesville North Carolina

If you’re like me and believe that a road trip (or even a quick afternoon outing) is infinitely better with your dog by your side, then you already know the struggle of finding places that welcome our four-legged companions. Over the past few visits to Western North Carolina, I’ve found three spots that feel tailor-made for pups and their people. They each have a unique charm, and I’m excited to share them with you (and your dog) as bona fide must-stops.

Waynesville North Carolina

I’ve traveled to Waynesville a few times now, and I can confidently say this is one of the best spots to take a small getaway especially in the Fall. Last fall (2024) we took a small weekend getaway with our dogs to Waynesville and it was incredible. This town is giving Asheville mixed with a smaller Boone NC. Known for it’s art scene, it also has the cutest historic downtown area full of authentic shops, food, and more. There are tons of breweries and food options that truly has something for everyone. However, if you’re interested in bringing your pampered pooch continue on for a few of my favorite ways to spend an evening in Waynesville North Carolina.

Smoky Mountain Dog Bakery & Dog Bar — Waynesville, NC

The moment I stepped into Smoky Mountain Dog Bakery in downtown Waynesville, I felt like I’d stumbled into doggy heaven. The warm scent of freshly baked goods met us at the door, and before I’d even looked around, my dog had already been offered a complimentary treat. (That little moment won me over for life.)

I learned that this place is more than just a pet bakery—it’s built on the idea that dogs deserve the same delight in food that their humans enjoy. They craft wholesome, decorative treats daily, and they stock a wide range of collars, leashes, toys, chews, and pet accessories (many made or inspected in-house). My personal favorite part about this is the amount different dog chews offered here. I got Benny (my golden) some dried chicken feet, duck feet, beef patties, pumpkin chews, and even a dried bladder! My dog is absolutely obsessed with all of the goodies this place has to offer!

What I personally loved: as I browsed the treat bar, the staff chatted with me about my dog’s dietary sensitivities, suggested flavors, and let me sample. The staff are always so incredibly kind and helpful, always offering suggestions or giving advice. They were even on a first name basis with some of the locals that came in! They are extremely knowledgeable and can almost guarantee if you have a question they’ll get you an answer. I even picked up a little sweater and a fun squeaky toy before heading out. Apparently, this bakery is often ranked among the Top 10 dog bakeries in the U.S. (I can see why).

If your pup is a foodie (or just loves to sniff every corner), this is a perfect first stop in Waynesville.

Mast General Store — Waynesville, NC

After our treat-fueled stop, my pup and I ambled down Main Street to Mast General Store. From the outside, it looks like an old-time general store (and it’s exactly that—but with dog perks). Leashed dogs are welcome inside, which I deeply appreciate (especially when it rains or the sun is blazing).

Inside, you’ll find a fascinating mix: outdoor gear, apparel, classic candy counters, home goods, and even a section devoted to pet supplies. They carry leashes, collars, dog travel accessories, and locally made treats. My dog’s ears perked up when someone behind the counter pulled out a jar of dog biscuits—he got one (or three) before I could say “thank you.”

One fun little detail: they sometimes stock treats made by Smoky Mountain Dog Bakery (so your pup can enjoy the same goodies at two spots!). I also like how the store is classic and nostalgic—wandering those creaky wooden floors with my dog felt like stepping back in time, but with a modern pet-friendly twist. I even got the cutest cardinal coaster, and the absolute most adorable nature themed birdhouse! This place is like a Cracker Barrel gift shop on steroids.

If you’re strolling through Waynesville’s downtown, this is a lovely, dog-inclusive way to shop local, pick up nature gear (or fun gifts), and let your pup soak up some attention.

Frog Level Brewing Company — Waynesville, NC

After treats and shopping, it’s time for a drink (for you) and maybe some doggie dining (for Fido). That’s where Frog Level Brewing comes in. This local microbrewery has become one of my favorite hangouts in Waynesville, largely because of how warmly it welcomes pets. Their indoor and outdoor areas are pet-friendly, and they even have a dog-friendly menu item: diced chicken with peas and carrots.

The brewery is situated right alongside a creek, and their outdoor beer garden / music venue makes it feel like a riverside retreat. I’ve sat on picnic benches there, watching my dog lounge and sniff the air while I sipped on one of their many taps (they routinely run 21 on tap) and nibbled their pub fare favorites. The wings are also to die for! (get the lemon pepper).

The staff were extremely friendly, however you do mostly everything yourself. You’ll order at the bar, go grab a table, self serve your water, then after your waiter brings your food, you have to bring your things back inside. All to say, I enjoyed this experience a lot, I prefer being mostly left alone at restaurants. I highly recommend this spot for anyone with friendly dogs.

If I’m in Waynesville and want to unwind without leaving my dog tied up outside, Frog Level is my go-to.

Final Thoughts & Itinerary Suggestion

If I were planning a one-day dog-friendly jaunt in Waynesville, here’s how I’d do it:

  1. Morning: Arrive in Waynesville, park near downtown, and head straight to Smoky Mountain Dog Bakery. Let your pup pick a treat (or three), browse accessories, and get a feel for the town.
  2. Midday: Walk over to Mast General Store. Let your dog stretch while you shop for local crafts, outdoor gear, or gifts. Grab lunch from a nearby café (many have outdoor patios).
  3. Afternoon / Evening: Wind things down at Frog Level Brewing. Settle into a bench in the beer garden, order something for yourself, and let your pup enjoy the dog menu or lounge at your feet. (you can even take a hike on the dog friendly trail at Lake Junaluska after this)

If you’re looking for a dog friendly spot to take a mini vaca I highly recommend Waynesville for the perfect relaxing small town weekend. Please be sure to do your research first on what spots are dog friendly to avoid scheduling conflicts once there (I recommend using the BringFido app that shows tons of pet friendly spots in each town). If you’re needing recommendations to stay nearby check out Airbnb and look for “Nature Eco-Lodge in Lake Junaluska” it’s a cute rustic cabin (Grown Ups style) that just a 5 minute walk to the beautiful Lake Junaluska! Enjoy your stay and I hope you have a Pawsitively fantastic trip!
