Waterloo Falls
History of Waterloo
Waterloo Falls, nestled in Overton County, Tennessee, is a picturesque cascade steeped in local history and natural beauty. The falls are part of the Roaring River, a tributary of the Cumberland River, and have long been a destination for nature enthusiasts and a source of inspiration for local folklore. Historically, the area surrounding Waterloo Falls was frequented by Native American tribes, who utilized the river and its surroundings for hunting and gathering. It was also the battlegrounds between some illegal whiskey distillers and revenue collectors. During the 19th century, as settlers moved into the region, the falls became a scenic landmark and a hub for community gatherings. Over time, Waterloo Falls gained recognition as a tranquil retreat, offering visitors a chance to enjoy its cascading waters and lush environment. Today, it remains a cherished gem in Tennessee, celebrated for its serene atmosphere and historical significance.
What is Waterloo Venue & Events?
Waterloo is truly a hidden gem. Honestly, it was hard for me to write this without wanting to keep this spot all to myself. I discovered this enchanting place while browsing the Hipcamp app. Nestled near both White and Warren County Tennessee, this privately owned and operated Venue has been up and running since 2018, when it became Waterloo Venue & Events. Waterloo operates as a host for travelers wanting to engulf themselves in nature by camping, they also operate as an event venue available for rent for weddings and parties. The property itself is now considered private property, giving the owners the opportunity to keep this beautiful spot in amazing condition. While it is privately owned, you are able to stay, rent, or purchase a day ticket allowing you to explore this absolute gem.
The Falls
Waterloo Falls boasts a 35-foot falls that cascades into a serene fishing spot. The hike to the base of the falls is delightfully short, coming in at just 0.1 miles. If you decide to tent camp you can quite literally see the top of the falls from your tent. Your short walk to the falls includes walking on a designated pathway through the woods for less than 5 minutes until you come to an opening that overlooks the lower part of the creek that is below the falls. This pathway is less maintained as the others but still easily manageable. You will then come to a metal staircase that can lead to to ground level and comes in quite handy as this is a slippery area. I recommend wearing water shoes of some sort the entire time at the falls due to this. You can cross over the creek in certain shallow areas and get to the base of the falls rather quickly. While visiting the falls, we met a local gentleman and his son who were eager to show us that the falls can be climbed and jumped from, this was surreal experience as the waterfall is breathtaking enough. You are also allowed to fish here as well and we did quite well which was unexpected. The view here is incredible always, but at sunset when the day is winding down and you can hear the bugs and the birds, and the sun is casting a colorful hue against the falls, it is unbeatable. Waterloo Falls is in my opinion one of Tennessee’s biggest hidden gems.
Waterloo Venue
The property owners are incredibly welcoming and genuinely passionate about what they do. The event venue itself is stunning. Situated beside a crystal-clear creek, the barndominium-style structure radiates rustic charm, making it perfect for weddings or parties. An upstairs loft is available for rent, ideal for guests seeking a convenient post-ceremony retreat. The open downstairs area includes an impeccably clean bathroom and kitchen facilities, accessible to all property guests. While camping near an event venue might sound less appealing to those seeking an escape, we experienced no disturbances. The owners are meticulous about maintaining a peaceful environment, ensuring events conclude well before bedtime.
Accommodations at Waterloo
Waterloo isn’t just an event venue; it’s a retreat that caters to both day visitors and overnight adventurers. Among its standout offerings is the enchanting “Tent in the Trees,” a glamping-style escape that overlooks a serene, crystal-clear creek. Tucked away in the woods and accessible via a short, scenic walk past the main event space, this elevated tent combines the beauty of nature with the comforts of home. Perched above the forest floor, it provides a cozy bed for restful nights, sparing guests the hassle of traditional camping. Perfect for those new to camping or anyone seeking a luxurious outdoor experience, this secluded hideaway features convenient parking and a guided walkway leading right to its doorstep. Outside, a charming sitting area invites you to savor a steaming cup of coffee while basking in the tranquil sounds of the creek and rustling leaves. For a unique blend of adventure and comfort, the “Tent in the Trees” can be booked on Hipcamp under Waterloo Falls.
However, there is also the option to tent camp (this is the option I recommend). Now hear me out, I am not normally the one who absolutely adores tent camping but this spot was absolutely everything you wish for in tent camping. While it did not have water hook up or electric we chose fully immersing ourselves in nature—and it was the best decision we could have made. The campsite is located just off a gravel path past the main venue. Perched atop the waterfall, the tent site offers a stunning view right over the cascade, as well as incredibly peaceful flowing water sounds making for a perfect nights sleep. Sleeping here felt like something out of a dream. The proximity to the water is unbeatable—just a short five-foot stroll from the tent site. The grassy area near the creek is well-maintained, making the crystal-clear, shin-deep water easily accessible. Keep in mind the waterfall is only around 20 feet away from the entry point to the water so kids and dogs would still need to be closely supervised. For first-time campers, this is an ideal spot. The location on private property provides a sense of security, nestled beside the waterfall yet open enough to feel safe and aware of your surroundings. The property owners also live on-site, adding another layer of reassurance. Despite their proximity, the trees and foliage create a sense of privacy and tranquility.
Other Property Perks (second waterfall)
The property also features a second, smaller waterfall. After passing the event venue and taking a left, you’ll find a short wooded trail leading past the “Tent in the Trees” after just a few minutes of walking on the well maintained path, you’ll come to an opening in the trees, bringing you to this more delicate cascade directly to your left. It’s the perfect spot for relaxation. The water here is shallow but equally as mesmerizing, ideal for wading, lounging, or letting kids and dogs play. While you can easily swim near the base of the falls, this area is better suited for exploring, finding cool rocks or crawdads, and enjoying the gentle flow. Located right at the top of this smaller waterfall, there is ankle deep water treading for about 100 yards. Small rock steps, that are easy to climb, can quickly get you to the top where you can have a picturesque view of the entire area. This spot is easily accessible and perfect for anyone with mobility concerns. For maximum convenience, consider renting the “Tent in the Trees,” as it’s just steps away from this serene waterfall.
Waterloo truly has something for everyone, offering a blend of natural beauty, history, and thoughtfully maintained facilities. Whether you’re camping, fishing, or simply soaking in the sights, it’s a place you’ll never forget.
