While planning a relaxing birthday weekend getaway, I came across the most charming little gem nestled near the edge of the North Carolina mountains—Starlight Hills Campground. Located between Asheville and Charlotte NC, this scenic retreat seemed like the perfect escape. I reached out to the owner, William, about a possible collaboration, and to my delight, he was all in. From there, the birthday trip quickly took shape. Located in near the surrounding nearby areas of Rutherfordton, Forest City, or Chimney Rock, I knew there would be plenty to keep us busy.
The Campground Experience
Starlight Hills is a newer campground tucked away in the hills near Bostic, NC. Despite its intimate, off-the-beaten-path feel, the property is full of thoughtful details and unique amenities. From geodome stargazing to mountainside hammocking, a sunset-view spa, scenic hiking trails, and even a peaceful pond and creek, there’s plenty to explore without ever leaving the grounds.
Whether you’re looking to disconnect or dive into outdoor adventure, you can easily spend a full weekend here immersed in nature and comfort. When we first arrived, we pulled in to the long gravel driveway that takes you to the campground in the sky. The driveway is a little rough but my 2 wheel drive made the journey just be cautious and drive slow. Once we got to the top of the driveway there are multiple gravel paths that take you throughout the campground. Clear & concise signs directed us all the way to our camp site tucked away in the woods, Luna View Dome.
Geodome Stay: “Luna”

We stayed in the Luna Geodome, and it was everything I’d hoped for and more. From the moment we pulled up the small gravel drive, I was impressed. The dome had its own private little nook of the property, complete with a picnic table, fire pit, and breathtaking mountain views—especially during sunrise and sunset. On the outside, the dome is elevated on a tall wooden deck wrapping completely around the dome itself. You’re able to walk out on the porch and overlook the valley, or gaze at the stars at night while relaxing on the patio set.
Inside the dome, William had thought of every little touch. It was very open and large, giving plenty of room for the both of us. The interior was a well lit open complex that offered plenty of light with the domes main wall being glass so you’re able to enjoy the natural surroundings from the comfort of your bed. However, at night and blackout curtains offered privacy and the option to sleep in. There were fans, board games, extra blankets, a table setup, and more. The star of the show, though, was the outer space projector, which we used both nights—it transformed the space into a cozy planetarium under the stars.

Property Highlights
Mountain-View Spa

One of my absolute favorite features of this stay was the private spa deck. Set on the mountainside, this area includes a hot tub, sauna, fire pit, and lounge chairs—all arranged for comfort and seclusion. We booked a session from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM, and I highly recommend an evening slot so you can take in the sunset while soaking in the tub. The spa also includes an outdoor shower directly beside the hot tub—perfect for a refreshing rinse after your session. The sauna is a compact walk in sauna that also give you the opportunity to over look the beautiful view while relaxing in the toasty heat. I can’t describe how perfect this spot would be for a fall vacation over looking the different colored leaves! To book you can drive right up to the spa area and there is a large poster with a QR code that lets you book the time that works best for you. You can even use the camps Wifi that works only in the area near the spa and restroom.

Outdoor Showers & Facilities
While there’s no traditional bathhouse, the port-o-potties were clean, stocked, and well-maintained. The two outdoor showers were a highlight—simple yet thoughtfully designed. They’re private, spacious, and surprisingly luxurious, with options to adjust how “outdoorsy” you want the experience to be. One side of the shower faces the mountain and is covered by a curtain you can open or close depending on your comfort level. Plus, William stocked them with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, which was such a thoughtful touch.

On-Site Adventures
There’s a lot to do right on the property. A shared outdoor lounge area offers hammocks, a grill, and picnic tables overlooking a spectacular sunset view—perfect for winding down your evening. This shared common area is the most popular spot on the property to view the sunset as it’s very large and open and multiple families could fit here comfortably.

You’ll also find:
- Miles of private hiking trails
- A quiet, wooded pond
- A mountain creek
- And, just 15 minutes down the road, a secret swimming hole—though be warned, you’ll need 4-wheel drive to access it. We didn’t quite make it ourselves, but from what I’ve seen, it’s a hidden paradise well worth the extra effort.
The Host: William
From my first message to our check-out day, William was an incredible host. He responded to texts, emails, and messages almost instantly. His friendliness, attention to detail, and willingness to offer local tips made the experience that much better. He provided insider suggestions for nearby hikes, a hidden waterfall, and more. His passion for this place is obvious, and it truly shows in how well it’s run.
