Silver Springs has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people, who relied on the spring’s crystal-clear waters for sustenance and transportation. In the 19th century, Silver Springs became a popular destination for steamboat tours, drawing visitors eager to see its breathtaking beauty.By the late 1800s, Silver Springs introduced glass bottom boats—an innovation that allowed visitors to view the underwater world in stunning detail without getting wet. Over time, this unique attraction earned Silver Springs the nickname “Nature’s Underwater Fairyland.” Today, it remains one of Florida’s most iconic destinations, combining history, wildlife, and recreation.
Silver Springs also used to be host to several different iconic pieces of history. In the 1930s and 1940s, Silver Springs was a popular filming location for Hollywood productions. Films such as “Tarzan the Ape Man” (1932) and “Creature from the Black Lagoon” (1954) were shot here. Adjacent to Silver Springs, the Wild Waters water park was established in 1978 and became a popular summer destination. It featured attractions like a wave pool, multiple water slides, and children’s play areas. However, over time, attendance declined, and the park eventually closed. Today, the abandoned structures of Wild Waters stand as a testament to its former popularity, with nature gradually reclaiming the area.

Parking

Parking is included with the park’s day-use fee, so you won’t have to worry about additional charges. Arriving early is recommended, especially during weekends or peak seasons, to secure a spot close to the entrance and avoid potential crowds.
Manatees at Silver Springs
Silver Springs is also home to one of Florida’s most beloved creatures: the manatee. Gliding like gentle giants through the crystal-clear waters of Silver Springs, Florida, manatees are a breathtaking sight, especially during the cooler months when they migrate in search of warmer waters. These massive marine mammals, sometimes called “sea cows,” can weigh up to 1,300 pounds at their peak! Despite their size, they are slow-moving creatures, reaching speeds of only about 5 mph—partly due to their large, barrel-shaped bodies and lack of natural predators, allowing them to take life at a leisurely pace. Manatees are herbivores, grazing on seagrasses and aquatic plants for up to eight hours a day to sustain their enormous bulk. Mothers give birth to a single calf about every two to five years, and these babies stay close to their mothers for at least a year, learning the ways of the water. While these animals seem friendly and curious, it is illegal for humans to touch or harass them—both to protect them from harm and to prevent them from becoming too accustomed to people, which could put them in danger around boats and other human activities. Silver Springs provides a unique refuge where these fascinating creatures can be observed in their natural habitat, floating peacefully through the spring-fed waters.
Best Time to Spot Manatees: Visit between November and March for the best chance to see manatees. Bring binoculars for an even closer look at these fascinating animals.
Crystal-Clear Waters
The centerpiece of Silver Springs is its breathtaking, crystal-clear water. The springs produce over 550 million gallons of water daily, making it one of the largest artesian spring formations in the world. The clarity of the water allows for unparalleled views of the underwater world. Once you rent your kayak or glass bottom boat at the springs, they will guide you down a small incline towards the water to get started. You will encounter many different specifies of wildlife along the paddle including:
- Turtles
- Alligators
- Monkeys
- Turkey
- Manatees
Take your time as you paddle through this incredible experience, immersing yourself in the rich history and stunning natural surroundings. Keep in mind you have 2 whole hours to explore. Along the way, you’ll pass remnants of the past, including Silver Springs Landing—an abandoned building that once served purpose before the development of the current Silver Springs shopping area. Towering moss-draped trees and beautifully weathered statues add to the area’s timeless charm. Your journey will take you on a roughly 45-minute paddle until you get to a U-shaped route to the left, eventually opening up into a wider section of the river. Here, the crystal-clear waters reveal a breathtaking underwater world teeming with vibrant algae, cattails, and swaying tape grass. This area is also home to a diverse array of fish, including blue tilapia, bass, catfish, and black crappie.
This area is where we seen multiple different manatee including a momma and her baby which both were incredibly curios of us and momma was sure to show off her baby to us as they both peaked up above the water to say hello. Being able to witness them so close was such an incredible experience. Please keep in mind that you are not allowed to touch the manatees. After you’re ready to wrap up, you’ll follow the stream up to where the glass boat tours begin and there will be a small opening at the left that takes you through a narrow creek area where you’ll go under a bridge and emerge close to where you started your journey.
The Famous Glass Bottom Boats
One of the most iconic experiences in Silver Springs is a ride on the glass bottom boats. These boats were first introduced in the 1870s and have since become a signature attraction of the park.
